Sowing Seeds, Reaping Hope

MOLI, Niger – It’s hard to imagine suddenly losing everything you own—especially when your livelihood and survival depends on it.
When floodwaters hit the village of Moli in Niger, families lost everything: their home, cattle, and crops.
To reach the village of Moli with aid, relief workers boarded wooden boats and crossed what appeared to be a muddy river—a valley flooded by the recent heavy rains.
CBN’s Operation Blessing teams have been working in the impoverished village of Moli for some time, helping provide sustainable hunger relief through agriculture programs. But the floods wiped out the crops, leaving the people of Moli hungry and without hope.
“The hardest day in my life was the day the waters came,” said Fati, a mother of nine children. “When the waters came, they came all at once and I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know if I would have a place to sleep the next day. Everything we are used to has been lost—our house, our crops, our animals and our clean water.”
The muddy water had flooded the water well—potentially contaminating the village’s only source of clean drinking water. So relief workers disinfected the well, providing a clean source of water once more.
Workers also brought new seeds to the villagers so they can replant their gardens and fields with nutritious foods like cabbage, onion, okra and other staple crops.
“In the whole village of Moli, everyone has one war, one thing that bothers us constantly—hunger,” Fati said. “And in all my years living in this village, I’ve never seen hunger like I’m seeing it now. But with these seeds you restore hope for our village. Now there is work for us to do, and something to have hope in. I am really happy, because in my heart I know that God has helped our village, and we can start rebuilding.”
