–“My work in the coal mine is very dangerous—especially in the cave.. It shakes a lot and the stones always fall down and hit the workers,” said Mr. Boe.
Mr. Boe of China takes the risk anyway. Spending 10 to 12 hours a day, he pushes a tram and digs for coal hundreds of feet underground. He does this all for about four dollars a day.
“If I didn’t work in the mine, I wouldn’t have any money for my family,” explained Mr. Boe.
Mr. Boe’s 8-year-old daughter Sulan is in desperate need of cleft lip surgery. She’s lived with this deformity since birth.
“Sulan doesn’t like to lift her head up in front of people,” added Mrs. Boe.
“Kids won’t play with her. Her classmates laugh at her and call her “the cleft mouth,” added Mr. Boe.
Many of the villagers, who are superstitious, call her “cursed.” They blame Mr. and Mrs. Boe for Sulan’s cleft lip.
Of course, Sulan’s parents had never accepted this. They’ve just kept diligently working. With Mr. Boe in the coal mine and Mrs. Boe in the field, both were hoping that one day they’d make enough money to fix Sulan’s cleft lip. But that never happened, until CBN stepped in to help.
“When I heard CBN could fix my daughter’s lip, I was so happy,” said Mrs. Boe.
CBN arranged for Sulan to receive cleft lip and palate surgery free of charge. Taking a look at her now, the difference CBN partners made in Sulan’s life is written all over her smiling face.
“She looks beautiful and people don’t look down on her anymore,” said Mrs. Boe.
“I’m not the same as I used to be. Now I can make friends and my classmates want to play with me,” shared Sulan.
CBN has touched many others in Sulan’s community as well. The villagers all say that they are really blessed now because someone has helped them.
Today, Sulan can lift her head with confidence because she knows that her future is bright.
“When I grow up, I want to go to college and get a good job. Thank you CBN. I’m so glad you helped me,” said Sulan.
“CBN helped me to see that there are kind people out there who really care about other people,” added Mrs. Boe.
