– “I can’t walk as fast as the other kids. Because of my heart, because of my disease.”
Ten-year-old Sun Hoe of rural China was born with narrow arteries and a missing heart valve. This left him weak and short of breath.
The doctor says, “It’s dangerous. You don’t know when his heart will suddenly stop. It could happen anytime and anywhere.”
As frightening as this might seem for a little boy, Sun Hoe has never let it stop him.
His principal recalls, “He has a greater passion for life and for his studies than other kids.”
Sun Hoe was so determined to succeed that he used to walk to school, even in the rain and snow.
“It was easy for other children to walk to school in 20 minutes,” says his principal. “But for him, it took about an hour to finish the same distance.”
Unfortunately, Sun Hoe’s family had no money to treat his disease. His father died when Sun Hoe was two, and then his mother abandoned him. So, when he’s not in school, he stays with his grandmother who is raising him.
She says, “I didn’t have any money for him to see a doctor, so I just waited and waited. I was really sad, but I didn’t have any way to help him.”
Surgery seemed out of reach for Sun Hoe ... that is until CBN and Operation Blessing came along to help.
The doctor says, “We have to give him another chance on life. If we don’t operate on him, he won’t live.”
Within a short time, Operation Blessing set up the surgery to repair Sun Hoe’s heart.
“I was surprised with CBN’s efficiency and speed,” says his principal. “Some organizations make you wait for up to six months just for a reply.”
Surgeons worked on Sun Hoe’s heart for many hours, but because he is young, his recovery was quick.
And today? Sun Hoe’s heart is strong, and he’s celebrating his 10th birthday. Thanks to the gifts of CBN partners, Sun Hoe has a fresh start on life, and he’s looking forward to many birthday parties to come!
His grandmother says, “I never thought things would turn out like this. Sun Hoe is a lucky boy, and he will never forget you.”
“Before, I didn’t have any friends because they were all scared of my disease,” says Sun Hoe. “Now, everyone wants to play with me … and I can get to school in less than half an hour!”
The principal agrees, “Sun Hoe suffered for 10 years. Then you helped him in the last moments of his life. It was your selfless spirit that saved Sun Hoe’s life.”
