You Can Love Your Work

CBN.com - Deep in the heartland of Kansas, Donny and Connie Werner are keeping an age-old woodworking craft alive. Their business is called Werner Wagon Works.

“Our business is - we build wagons,” Connie said. “Donny is a wainright and a wheelwright, and we build horse drawn vehicles.”

“A normal size wagon is about six weeks [of work], which that would be a box wagon or a covered wagon,” Donny said. “A stage coach is about a four month project.”

Donny is a man of few words, but he gets a lot of enjoyment from his work. When asked what he likes most about his woodworking, he said:

"Seeing the finished product, the challenge - different challenge to it. My thing is the tougher it is the better," Donny said.

Not long ago, Donny and Connie faced some incredible challenges.

“This has been about three years ago or so and our business was really - we were almost to the point of bankruptcy,” Connie said. “You just feel like you get so far down in a hole that you can’t get back up.”

Business had dried up and the debts began to pile up: to the tune of $250,000.

“Throughout that time when our business was slow, we had accumulated debt on credit cards,” Connie said. “And that’s a horrible thing to do. It just multiplies and multiplies and multiplies.”

It got to the point that Connie dreaded answering the phone.

“The telephone ringing saying, “when are you going to make a payment?’ It was to the point to where we didn’t know what we were going to do,” Connie said.

Connie realized she had not made giving a priority.

“I had tithed off and on, but it’s like an ‘off and on’ thing; kind of like a check mark - OK, I did that,” Connie said. “ I did that this week, but I don’t know if I’m going to do it next week.”

Connie heard a teaching about giving.

“About tithing, he says, ‘test Me.’ And I don’t know if there is any other issue in the bible that he says test me on?” Connie said.

The Werners made a renewed commitment to giving. Connie said they saw immediate results.

"It was just like boom, boom, boom - one thing after the other. One project lead to the next project, lead to the next project. And we tithed on every one of those projects. And the projects just kept getting bigger,” Connie said.

In 2005, the Werners became members of CBN’s 700 Club gold.

“And the blessings keep coming,” Connie said.

This year, a wagon they built for a boys ranch in South Dakota was selected to be in President Obama’s inaugural parade. The green and white oversized hitch wagon carried boys from the McCrossen boys’ ranch and it was pulled by six Belgian horses.

"Naturally, it was just an honor to do it for the boys’ ranch," Donny said.

In just three years their debts have been cut in half.

“Every time that we get something paid off, it's just like your shoulders come up a little bit higher,” Connie said. “You sit up a little bit straighter, just because that debt just weighs so heavy on you.”

"It makes you come to work easier every day; when you know your business is growing and you see the light at the end of the tunnel," Donny said.

"The law of reciprocity works. Pat Robertson teaches on it. I’ve watched him teach on it and it works,” Connie said. “I don’t know what else to say but just try it. Put your faith in the Lord and try it."

Donny and Connie saw the rewards of applying the Law of Reciprocity -- "Give and it shall be given to you" -- by giving to CBN. Here is your chance to give to the Lord and see your dollars bring truth to hurting people, feed and clothe needy children, keep The 700 Club Prayer Counseling Center phone lines operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and provide medical care to those who need a tangible touch of God's love.
