Dancing Leaves

By Cathy Irvin
CBN Staff Writer

CBN.com -  I welcome autumn, and I am glad it has arrived. I enjoy the breeze blowing through my window in the evening because it seems so calm, peaceful and relaxing.

I am looking forward to more mini-trips to the ocean and mountains. I promised my little great-granddaughter Destiny that since she has started preschool and my daughter’s wedding is over, that we would go on a weekend trip.

She likes to pick up bird feathers and little rocks, so I am hoping she might like to gather leaves of gold and red too. I would really like to talk to her about how God makes these trees change colors and then, how after the leaves fall, the trees will be bare in the colder days, yet will be replaced with a covering of snow.

I might also tell her that they will need new clothes after the winter is over. God clothes the trees with brand-new green leaves to wear during the spring and summer too.

We can learn so much about God’s great big, beautiful world and teach our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren about how wonderful our Father God is, and that He made all of  the earth for us to enjoy.

God takes good care of all His children. He gives us warm sunshine and the cool rain to make the flowers and crops grow. I think in our lives we often take these little things for granted.

Just the other day I was watching my cat play with a leaf and saw how she seemed so content. She danced around the leaf, flipping it in the air. It was as if all of a sudden, she became aware of her surroundings and became frisky, alert and no longer lazy.

Do we get lazy from just the same old routine? Do we ever stop and take in the grandeur of God’s creation and thank Him for each day and all that is available to us?

I am really looking forward to seeing the leaves turn gold, brown and red. When I gather them up in a bundle, I’m going to throw them up in the air and catch them with Destiny. I know this will help me share with her the story of God and His creation.

Fall leaves remind us of how we are God’s creation and how He sent His son to catch us because like those dancing leaves that fall to the ground and die, we too must reach the place that we die to ourselves and realize that we need to be resurrected and become a new creation.

When we allow Jesus a place in our hearts, He makes us brand new. He clothes us in His robe of righteousness. He changes us just like He changes the leaves. He helps us rid ourselves of the old nature so that we attain new life “In Him.”

Next time the wind blows, and you see those dancing leaves, let your heart be glad for you are His special creation!

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJ).
