CBN.com -- After almost two decades as a commercial equipment repairman, John Moore can fix just about anything.
“I never met a piece of equipment I couldn’t repair,” says John.
But a few months ago, his boss made an unexpected visit, and John suddenly faced a problem he couldn’t fix.
“He came over, knocked on the door,” recalls John. “I went out, shook his hand, greeted him, asked what was up and he told me they were letting me go.”
After nineteen years with the same company, John was laid off due to restructuring. He was without an income to provide for his family of six. His wife, Yvonne, was recently hit by a car in a store parking lot, and is still recovering from her injuries.
As he continued to look for full time work, john picked up scrap metal and found equipment he could fix and sell.
“I’m resourceful enough, with the help of God, that I can find a way to do it. Other people’s trash, I turn into a way to support my family,” says John.
But often, it still wasn’t enough.
John remembers, “many of months, it was a choice between ‘Do I keep the power on or do I buy groceries?’”
But there is help just a few houses down the street. Mary Cottrell runs “Feed the Hunger.” From her garage, she provides food and other necessities to more than 900 families a month in the Orlando, Florida area. Operation Blessing gives Mary most of the food and supplies she uses to meet the area’s increasing need.
“It’s not just the one on the street begging for money,” says Mary. “It’s people who’ve never had to ask for anything in their lives. We pat people on the back, we want them to smile, we want them to think, ‘God loves me.’”
The Moore’s say the food is a big help. Between John’s hard work and the support of Operation Blessing, it’s enough to keep the family going.
“It really makes a difference knowing that you have something to cook and you don’t have to worry about the kids going hungry,” says John’s wife Yvonne.
“It’s been a lifeline to us, it truly brought me back to feeling that I am blessed,” says John. “I lost my job and found there are things I need. I need my wife. I need my kids. I need my God.”
The Moore’s say they appreciate Feed the Hunger, and Operation Blessing.
