CAPITOL HILL - We have heard much in recent weeks from the media
about shameful photos and video of American soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners.
Americans were disgusted, yes. But that was nothing compared to what was unveiled
on Capitol Hill Wednesday. Shown were shocking videos of horrific atrocities
committed by Saddam Hussein against his own people, one of the main reasons
America went to war.
The tape is hard to watch, and the senators who released it say that is the
point. The tape is proof positive of the reality of Iraq under Saddam Hussein.
At first what you see are Saddam's henchmen preparing to chop off a body part,
presumably because of some crime against Saddam and his government.
The video continues. An Iraqi man is about to have his tongue cut off, and
the pain is unbearable.
On the tape, verses from the Koran are quoted. There is a line about how
this is being done in the name of Allah, and in another part, one of Saddam's
soldiers explains what is about to happen to the next victim, who is about
to have his arm cut off.
Later in the tape, there is a beating that goes on for a while and then a
beheading, with a mob standing around to watch.
Throughout all of the video, Senators Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and Joseph Lieberman
(D-CT) stood to the side, motionless, not watching. Many others at the press
conference could not bear to watch either. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) says
comparing the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners by some American soldiers at
Abu Ghraib prison to torture like this is wrong.
Santorum said, "When we found out about that treatment, we prosecuted
that treatment and these people are being severely punished. That's the difference,
and it's a difference that is a real difference with a very meaningful distinction
that at least has some have missed."
As for how the tape went public, Santorum asked the Defense Department if
they had any video showing Saddam's torture. Though the tape has been in the
possession of the Defense Department for some time, it was finally released
to Santorum this week.
