Abortion and John McCain
February 19, 2007
What do you think the pro-life community will make of John McCain this weekend? The Associated Press is running a national article with the headline: "McCain: Abortion ruling should be overturned."
This is what he said in Iowa this weekend:
"I do not support Roe vs. Wade. It should be overturned."
On the flip side, The Politico is running a story where McCain talks about how there's really not much he can do on the abortion issue. He says:
''I don't know anything, physically I can do'' to reduce abortions," McCain said.
Lines like that won't endear himself to the pro-life community. I'm sure this is John McCain being John McCain. He's a straight shooter and is just telling it like it is.
You know, the Straight Talk Express bus and everything.
But when you're trying to court Evangelicals and other devoted pro-life social conservatives, they don't want to hear a potential future President say something like that. A better answer may have been, "Well, I'll appoint strict constructionists to the bench, I'll sign the fetal pain bill, etc."
I sure sound like a Monday morning quarterback. I know he was on the spot right there and loooking back, he'd probably say something different. But, in a 2008 race that has already begun in 2007, everybody's watching, even this early.
