McCain's Camp: "I wouldn't Trade Our Position in the Race With Anyone"
March 26, 2007
Ok, so John McCain isn't going to do as great with his fundraising as he would have liked. Here's my take on it. It's a long and complicated answer. Ready? You can quote me:
So what?
I don't read much into this. McCain is still part of the Republican big three. The fact that he may come in below expectations doesn't kick him out of the exclusive group. McCain did about 20 fundraising events in March. He's going to do another 20 or so in April. He's getting off to a late start. Danny Diaz, spokesman with the McCain camp tells me this:
"We're confident of the organization that has been put in place. I wouldn't trade our position in the race with anyone."
I realize that McCain's opponents will trash him over this but in my view, the only thing that could boot McCain to the curb is some sort of gaffe on the Straight Talk Express or in one of those freewheeling Town Hall deals. That could happen but cash isn't going to be McCain's problem. To me, it's going to be a lot more interesting to see how Brownback and Huckabee fair in their race for the cash. The one that fares better will begin to get more traction in mainstream media circles. The Politico's Jonathan Martin has great coverage on the fundraising angle here.
