Brody File Exclusive: Rudy Giuliani is Against Hate Crimes Bill
May 3, 2007
I file this story from the GOP Presidential debate here in Simi Valley, California. I just finished an interview with Bill Simon, one of Rudy Giuliani's top campaign advisors. He told me that Rudy Giuliani is against the current Hate Crimes bill that was approved just the other day by the House of Representatives. You can actually watch what Bill Simon said above. Here's the actual quote;
"I think it's safe to say, having spoken with the Mayor about this type of issue that he believes these kind of matters are best left to the states. The doctrine of federalism. The 10th amendment says the federal government is the appropriate place to decide certain things. The state government , the local government is the appropriate place to decide other things...In this context, hate crime legislation I think the Mayor believes that it would fall in that context."
For a few weeks, I had been asking the Giuliani campaign about this controversial bill. They felt it would be best for Bill Simon to talk to me about it directly. The legislation is controversial because it would classify "sexual orientation" as a specific hate crime under federal law. Conservative groups are against the bill. Pro-gay rights groups are for it. Giuliani has taken pro-gay rights positions in the past. Some may say his position against the hate crimes bill smacks of pandering but Bill Simon says that Giuliani believes this is a federalism issue and that something like this should be left up to the states. It shouldn't be decided at the federal level. I know you Rudy haters will say that the federalism argument is a cop out but if you're a social conservative, as long as he's against it, that's all that matters right? Comments?
