Mike Huckabee to Brody File: "I Do Not Believe in Teaching About Sex or Contraception in Public Schools"

Do you like Abstinence Only programs being taught in Public Schools? Well, the Democrat controlled Congress isn't fond of them. They're pulling the plug. Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee had a very strong response to this below. First though, read part of this article from Medill Reports:
Leading House Democrats say they will pull the plug on abstinence-only education when a $50 million grant expires on June 30 – a move sparking outrage among social conservative groups.“As the House works to eliminate abstinence funding, their solution is simple - - provide more pills that prevent and abort pregnancies,” said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C.Perkins, in an email to supporters, said Democrats are pushing a “radical agenda that few voters expected –or supported—when they propelled the Democrats to power.” Democrats would still include money for abstinence teachings in schools, but would combine it with comprehensive sex-ed programs that would teach about birth control and other safe sex methods. States currently pay for abstinence-only education in public schools by matching $3 for every $4 they receive from the federal government. Congress initially approved the Title V funding as part of welfare reform. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said Wednesday that the decision to stop funding for the program wasn’t difficult at all. According to the Associated Press, Dingell said, “Abstinence only education seems to be a colossal failure.” Dingell backed that statement with a recent study given to Congress that students in four abstinence-only education programs were equally likely to have sex at the same age as those not in abstinence programs. The average age of those in the sample group having sex is 14.9 years, according to Mathematica Policy Research Inc.
YOu can read more here. Last week, I asked the GOP presidential candidates about this development and whether or not they're OK with Abstinence only programs being taught in public Schools. So far, I haven't received any response from the Giuliani, McCain and Romney camps. I did hear from Sam Brownback and Mike Huckabee about this: Their responses are below.
Mike Huckabee:
"Abstinence education provides a valuable counterweight to peer pressure and the message young people get from the popular culture encouraging casual relationships and separating sex from love, commitment and marriage. I do not believe in teaching about sex or contraception in public schools. That is the responsibility of parents. "I am disappointed that funding for abstinence education is not likely to be renewed by the Democrat Congress. This reversal only
emphasizes how important it is for Republicans to take back Congress and win the White House with an authentic conservative in 2008."I miss the America I grew up in where the Gideons gave Bibles to fifth graders instead of school nurses giving condoms to eighth graders. With so much at stake, it's important that we return to the core values and guiding principles which have made our country great."
Sam Brownback:
"Abstinence-only programs are great examples of curriculums that send positive messages to young people encouraging them to protect themselves and their future. Teens who abstain from sexual activity are less likely to have children out-of-wedlock; less likely to live in poverty and on welfare; and more likely to have stable marriages as adults. Title V of the Social Security Act supports abstinence education and aims to keep our youth out of harm's way by protecting them from sexually transmitted diseases and other risky situations. Accordingly, I support the reauthorization of Title V and have recently sent a letter to the Senate Finance Committee asking Chairman Baucus and Ranking Member Grassley to make this reauthorization a reality."
