Darfur: It's about Time…

August 1, 2007

Four years…since the beginning of the genocide in Darfur, Sudan.

Nearly two years…since former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton controversially stopped hearings on Darfur. He said it was time to take action, not sit on their duffs and listen to more testimony.  It was time to do something!

Now…almost two years after Bolton made those comments, the United Nations has finally passed a resolution to DO something. And finally taking the first steps towards action to end the gang rapes, pillaging and murder that is so prevalent in Darfur.  (For the details, take a look at our CBN News story.)

The price of waiting this long has been steep. The official tally is somewhere around 200,000 dead and 2.5 million displaced. Other organizations put the death toll at around double that.

In light of those numbers, the troops that the U.N. is planning to send seem to be sent a bit late. These plans will reportedly be fully implemented in six months to a year.

Anyone remember the fighting words President Omar al-Bashir used last year to rule out the deployment of this type of a troop deployment? He blamed "Jewish organizations" for raising the issue. Al-Bashir strongly denounced any deployment of U.N. troops. And…oh, by the way, two terrorist groups who have taken up residence in Darfur have long promised to wage jihad on any U.N. soldiers they can find. Take a look at this article from London's Telegraph newspaper from about a year ago: Darfur Dictator Bars UN Peacekeepers.

It will be interesting to watch as these troops begin to filter in to the country. What resistance will they meet? Will the terrorists there put up with having international troops in their back yard? We'll see. Hopefully, the people of Darfur will benefit from having them there…may it lead to greater peace and not greater suffering.
