Darfur: Case in Point
October 1, 2007
My last blog posting Friday discussed the desperate need for any U.N. peacekeepers entering Darfur to be ARMED; willing to defend themselves and others.
Then, as if to prove the point, the rebel forces attacked an African Union outpost this weekend. They killed 10. At least 20 are still missing. When you consider that there are only 150 soldiers posted there, that's nearly ten percent that were killed.
Here's the unusual aspect of the attack, it was carried out by the rebels.not the Janjaweed. Their reason? The Associated Press reports the rebels accuse the AU of "favoring the government and failing to protect civilians."
For their part, the AU says 7,000 troops are not enough to take care of everyone in the Darfur region-an area roughly the size of France.
I guess the lesson here is.if the Janjaweed doesn't get you, the rebels might. If a force goes in to keep the "peace," they better be willing to back it up with action.
Take a look at Jan Egeland's great comments on this issue on my last blog.
