Council of Europe: Creationism Tied to Extremism
October 11, 2007
Some politicians in Strasbourg are very concerned that an evil “American phenomenon” is infiltrating the minds of Europeans: Creationism. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe passed
this resolution last week. Government documents are usually a good sleep aid, but this one is quite straightforward and illuminating into the beliefs of Europe’s political elites. Some quotes from the resolution, which passed by a 48-25 margin:
“If we are not careful, creationism could become a threat to human rights…”
“The war on the theory of evolution and on its proponents most often originates in forms of religious extremism which are closely allied to extreme right-wing political movements.”
“…some advocates of strict creationism are out to replace democracy by theocracy.”
The resolution lumps Christian creationists in with Islamists, which suits the secular social agenda of the Council of Europe very nicely.
