CBNNews.com - A new study shows some college students are actually coming out of their universities dumber than when they went in.

It involves some of the subjects most vital to sustain a thriving democracy.

$40,000 a Year for What?

When it costs up to $40,000 a year to attend many American universities, you want to make sure you get your money's worth -- a really good education.

But a new study shows when it comes to turning out graduates well-educated about their own country and democracy, most of the top-notch universities score F's or D's.

Today CBN News spoke with retired Lieutenant General Josiah Bunting. Bunting is the chairman of the American Civic Literacy program, the organization that conducted the study. Click play to watch the interview now.

And in some cases, the students appear to be graduating with less knowledge than when they went in.

The Stark Facts

A new report from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute documents the stark facts.

Fourteen-thousand students were surveyed at 50 colleges. Not one of these institutions scored above a D+. Most of them failed altogether.

The survey tested what students know about America's history, its government, its international relations and how its economy works.

One of the most shocking findings was that at eight prominent universities, including three Ivy League schools, incoming freshmen scored higher than the seniors about to graduate. Four years of college actually drained them of knowledge in these areas.
