Huckabee tells Brody File: "I'm Stronger Than Most People" on Terror and Immigration
November 8, 2007
The Brody File has crews everywhere. I’m back in Washington DC after being in Iowa for a few days. But CBN political producer Robin Mazyck, who travels with me everywhere on the road, is still out there and tonight she sends in parts of her one on one interview with Mike Huckabee. She sat down with him in Cedar Rapids. Below are some interesting quotes. He’s taking aim at Romney for sure (you need to read between the lines) and he also addresses this idea that some evangelical leaders don’t see him as very strong when it comes to the war on terror. Finally, he talks about how a Huckabee nomination could just indeed be supernatural!
Is he talking about Romney here?
“People want to know not only do I agree with them, they want to know that I agree with myself -- that the positions that I take are truly the one that I believe and they’re not just something that I sort of cooked up in order to run for president. And so they can look back, whether it’s two or five or 10 or 20 years and say he was pro-life then. He believed in the second amendment then. He was for lower taxes then, this is a guy who believed in traditional marriage then. This is not a guy who suddenly determined what he’s all about. And authenticity and consistency are qualities that voters, I think are looking for more than anything else this year.”
On his Fundraising:
Robin: You talked about about a surge in the polls… you’ve been able to do that without raising any money. When are you going to raise that Ron Paul cash??
Huckabee: I don’t know if we’ll raise that much in 24 hours, but our contributions have surged in the last few weeks. We had to upgrade our web server three times in less than a week just to handle the traffic as people were contributing. We raised more money in a six day period than we had raised in the first three months. So it’s beginning to catch on. We are really just astounded. We hired extra people just to answer the phones and open the mail. So it’s just unbelievable to us how suddenly people are saying, you know what? This guy could actually win. Before that, a lot of people thought – we like him, like his message agree that he’s got the right positions on the issues, but we’re not sure if we’re going to support him because we don’t know if he can win. Now they’re saying he could win and the contributions are flowing and we’re on our way.
His message to people of faith:
"For people of faith, the easiest thing to understand is when God is in it, little is much. We’re the people who believe that a little boy with two small fish and five small biscuits fed 5,000 people. You know, we’re the people that believed that when David tried on the king’s armor it just didn’t fit right, but when he took five smooth stones he was able to bring down the giant. We’re the people who believe that even when Elijah wet the wood down at the alter three different times with water, against 850 prophets at Baal. He still was able to call the fire down from Heaven and consume the sacrifice. For Christian people to believe that it’s not so much about the money, it’s about the anointing of the message – that’s not hard. The hard thing is to think that Christians would ever doubt that. That Christians would ever have any other criteria – that believers would call themselves believers and say they accept the supernatural and except the extraordinary, and then say when it comes to politics it’s just strictly old conventional politics and business as usual. Not for me."
On Immigration and soft on terror criticisms:
"People look at my record and say that I’m as strong on immigration, strong on terror as anybody. In fact I think I’m stronger than most people because I truly understand the nature of the war that we are in with Islamo fascism. These are people that want to kill us. It’s a theocratic war. And I don’t know if anybody fully understands that. I’m the only guy on that stage with a theology degree. I think I understand it really well. And know the threat of it is absolutely overwhelming to us. As a president, nobody’s going to be stronger on building border security, not having amnesty, no sanctuary cities, having a process in place that forces a process that is legal. When it comes to national security, I understand that the threat that we face is not about our grandchildren having better homes and better cars, it’s about whether they’re going to have a breath and a pulse."
