Jeri Thompson gave it to me straight Tuesday night when I interviewed her at a hotel on the campaign trail in Waterloo, Iowa. There’s been a lot of criticism of her husband since he’s gotten in the race. As you might imagine, she believes it is unfounded. Watch her explain it above. Read the transcription below:
David Brody: Has the criticism been unfair and if so why?
Jeri Thompson: It has been stunningly unfair. The one thing that anyone that’s been close to Fred, again over the years that has worked with him knows, that his work ethic is bar none, one of the most diligent people I’ve ever met in my life.
If you look at his resume, if you look at the fact that at 17 he left high school, married, worked his way literally from the factory floor to a prosecutor, a federal prosecutor at 28. Let’s just take the one appointment that he’s gotten early on in his life. He happens to be working for Sen. Howard Baker in Washington. You think there’s a shortage of lawyers in Washington? Why would he choose someone like Fred Thompson? What was it that he saw in Fred Thompson that made him choose Fred Thompson to be Watergate Minority Council?
Then you fast forward through all the things that Fred has done – helping a woman named MarieRagghianti bring down a corrupt governor – even looking at that story, what made her see in Fred Thompson a champion in him? What was it about his big shoulders that made her think that he would take on the entire administration and did? And won. And that story, of course, became Maria’s, Sissy Spacek played.
What was it about Fred Thompson that made Condoleezza Rice, after he left the Senate ask him to help her go through, decipher issues of nuclear proliferation.What was it about Fred Thompson that made President Bush call him to help be the shepherd for now, thank goodness, God bless, Chief Justice John Roberts. What is it about Fred Thompson? It’s that very thing people don’t want to talk about, it’s almost an intangible.
