John McCain’s Electric Fever in New Hampshire
January 5, 2007
I’m on the ground here at a John McCain town hall meeting in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Folks, he may be 71 years old but here in New Hampshire, he has the energy of a 21 year old. I have covered John McCain throughout 2007 and I must say, he’s never been so on fire and red hot as now. The crowd here is overflowing out the door. The McCain bus had a hard time getting up the street because of all the people flowing in. After the event, the confetti came raining down from the sky. It sure felt and sounded like the Republican convention.
He was sharp as a tack, cracking jokes left and right and thoughts coming rapid-fire in a very coherent way. He was full of enthusiasm. He knows he can win New Hampshire. He knows he has a real shot at winning the nomination and you can see it on his face. he stayed positive here. No attacks on Mitt Romney.
As for his message, he wants to fix Washington. That’s a big part of his message but let’s be real here. This election will turn in a positive way for McCain if events focus on National Security and World events. This is where John McCain flourishes and separates himself from the pack. He told the crowd here that he will follow Osama Bin Laden to the “gates of Hell” (an oldie but goodie line)
When he opened the town hall up for questions, the first one was about Iraq. A gentleman wanted to know how America can solve the political problems between Sunni and Shiites. McCain said he doesn’t like the idea of partitioning the country and admitted that it’s tough sledding. He says there are no simple answers but believes the central government needs to play a key role.
McCain did get a question about illegal immigration and he came out and forcefully, with voice raised said that he does not support services for people who come to this country illegally. He called that, “absolutely false”. He went on to say he never supported social security benefits for people who come to this country illegally. And does not support amnesty. He said we are a Judeo-Christian nation and we need to treat these people with compassion.
John McCain has always been at his best when he’s unplugged. Well, let me just confirm that he is not only unplugged, he is on fire. Romney needs to watch out. Huckabee needs to watch out. John McCain just may take this enthusiasm in New Hampshire and become the ultimate “Comeback Kid”.
