CBNNews.com - The war between Darwin and design goes back 150 years, and the latest battle front in the debate is the basis of the new movie 'Expelled' which opened Friday.
In the film, actor and writer Ben Stein discovers what kind of message evolution communicates in the classroom.
There's the example of Dr. Richard Von Sternberg, editor of a science journal. He allowed an article on intelligent design to be published:
"It merely suggested that perhaps we aren't mud animated by lightning after all," Von Sternberg said.
Intelligent design expert Dr. Stephen Meyer used the movie to talk to scientists who say design is a dumb idea.
One opposer said intelligent design was not a research program. Another commented that it was all propaganda.
"We were accused of being diabolical, theocratic conspirators who were trying to force religion into the classroom," Meyer said.
But Stein says scientists aren't the only ones attacking the idea.
"The media is in on it, the courts, the educational system, everyone's after them." he said.
The attacks are perhaps not surprising when critics suggest Darwinism is not only improbable, but might actually be dangerous.
"The top Nazis in charge of the genocide, and Hitler himself, were clearly followers of Darwin," said one critic. "You need only rid little snippets of Mein Kampf to realize that Darwin was very much in Hitler's mind."
But now, intelligent design has its own defense: a film showing how the concept is treated by the scientific community and what design is all about.
