Obama and Moss Talked About Split for Months
May 31, 2008
A source close to the Obama campaign tells The Brody File that Barack Obama and Michelle Obama approached Trinity United Church Pastor Otis Moss III a couple months ago to discuss whether Obama should remain with the church.
This person tells me that Senator Obama asked pastor Moss how the controversy was affecting the church and the discussion focused in on what would be best for the church and best for Obama.
The initial conversation took place after the Jeremiah Wright sermons became widespread public knowledge but before Jeremiah Wright's speech to the National Press Club. Reverend Moss knew about Obama's decision to leave the Church "a little while ago."
This source close to the Obama campaign tells me that the talks between Obama and Moss centered on two specific concerns. First, that any remarks from the pulpit of Trinity United Church would be associated with Obama and that was problematic. This source says the Father Pfleger's sermon became a good illustration of this.
Secondly, Obama and Moss both had concerns about how the negative attention and scrutiny the Church was receiving had affected the Church.
Moss had concerns about how reporters were showing up inside worship services and church members were being called at home by reporters after their names were lifted from the church bulletin. The bottom line here is that it was a very tough environment for Trinity United church, or any church for that matter, to operate under and Barack and Michelle Obama didn't want the church to suffer any further.
