But this year, Americans are doing something likely to have a major impact on the Supreme Court. They're voting for a new president, one who may pick anywhere between three to six new Justices.
As the Court begins its new term, CBN News Washington senior correspondent Paul Strand discussed all this with lawyer Curt Levey, executive director of the Washington legal think-tank The Committee for Justice.
That group promotes judicial nominees who'll strictly interpret the Constitution rather than liberal judicial activists.
