Cartoon Pushes Back Against the Darkness

Our world is in serious moral and spiritual crisis and, sadly, children are suffering the consequences. The latest statistics from the U.S. alone are alarming:

  • Barely one-third of young teens (36%) believe that God exists and is the all-knowing, all-powerful Creator of the universe.
  • Nearly half don’t know if there is a God, don’t believe in His existence, or don’t care.
  • Most of the youngest teens (61%) either believe Jesus Christ sinned while He was on earth or hold open the possibility He did. *

Given the U.S. is the main exporter of influence, these trends do not bode well for the rest of the world.

This is critical because it is during these years that a person’s thinking is established. Dr. George Barna, in his latest book Raising Spiritual Champions, states, “A person’s worldview starts developing in the fifteen-month to eighteen-month age range and is largely in place by the age of thirteen. That’s the prime window of opportunity for discipleship.”*

It is no mystery that the type of media most attractive to this age range is animation. Animation transcends cultural boundaries and speaks to a child’s heart in a way no other medium can. It consistently tops the lists of highest-grossing movies and tv shows; media giants spend billions creating animated content. Animation is also highly compatible with the digital landscape children are familiar with. They naturally watch, re-watch, and engage with content through gaming apps, websites, and social media. This is why it is so concerning that the content filling this space is becoming more and more antithetical to Christianity. A space traditionally reserved for kids and families has been turned into a playground of godless indoctrination. We simply cannot afford to abandon this massively influential space and leave it for the enemy.

And what better content to counter this influence than the ultimate source of Truth—the Word of God. This is why, together with generous partners like you, we created the animated Bible series Superbook and integrate it with the latest digital technology: the Superbook Kids Bible App, Superbook Kids Website, and online Superbook Academy discipleship curriculum. The results have been remarkable. Gordon Robertson, CEO of the Christian Broadcasting Network, stated, “The Superbook animated series is the most successful evangelistic tool CBN has created in its more than 60 years of ministry.” And this is why:

Superbook Transforms Young Mischief Maker

Abhishek fought constantly, threw tantrums, and got kicked out of school for bad behavior.

Abhishek’s mother, Reena, explained, “Many neighbors and parents complained about him to me. I scolded him and so did his father, but his attitude did not change.”

Abhishek’s parents convinced him to go to an after-school program run by Orphan’s Promise. He learned arts-and-crafts, did group activities, and watched SuperBook.

Gloria, one of the teachers at the center, said, “I used the SuperBook stories to explain to Abhishek how his bad behavior could separate him from God. He gradually started taking interest in all the good lessons of the SuperBook series.”

Abhishek said, “I realized we should have faith in God, and we should also ask for forgiveness for our sins through prayer.”

Abhishek prayed with his teacher, and she asked God to protect him and bring out the good in him.

Reena said, “After this, he stopped getting in trouble in school, and started focusing on his studies. He was an obedient child at home too.”

Abhishek’s life was being transformed. He even bought himself a Bible and studied it intently.

“Abhishek told us about the Bible stories and showed us the SuperBook episodes at home,” said Reena. “He always prayed for the healing when I fell sick, and his prayers were always answered.”

Abhishek said, “I explained to my parents about the miracles of Jesus Christ from SuperBook and the Bible. Jesus gave sight to the blind, healed the crippled and raised people from death. Gradually, my parents started believing in Jesus Christ.”

Reena said, “Seeing this great change in Abhishek, even I was influenced by the love of God. Me and my family have now accepted Jesus Christ.”

Parents in his community no longer see Abhishek as a mischief-maker. Instead they see him as a positive influence on their children.

Abhishek said, “I love telling people about Jesus. I am forever grateful to CBN and SuperBook for giving me a new life, a life filled with purpose and peace.”

Little Girl Recalls Seeing Jesus After Hiking Accident

Melissa Harris remembers, “The way he was holding her and what she looked like, I I thought our daughter was gone.” In October of 2020, Mike and Melissa Harris enjoyed a cabin getaway and hiking with their kids in Ohio’s Wayne National Forrest. On their last day, Mike raced his daughter Mia down a path when suddenly, tragedy struck. “I heard Mike yell, ‘Oh Mia,’ and the way he said it, I just knew something awful had happened.”

“I remember grabbing her and just holding her in my arms and just I thought she was gone immediately. There was nothing, nothing, just lifeless,” says Mike.

A large tree branch had snapped and fallen 60 feet to the ground, hitting their four-year-old daughter, Mia, squarely on her head. She showed no signs of life as Mike prayed for her to wake up. Then, after nearly a minute, a scream. Melissa recalls, “It was just this awful scream. I mean, it was almost, it wasn't like a physical scream. It was like from the depths of her soul. It was...that was the worst thing I've ever heard. But at the same time, it was she's alive.”

“I handed her to my wife, and I said, 'Honey, you got to take her. I got to go,” says Mike. “I had a moment where I'm like, maybe this is the last time I'm going to hold my baby girl,” recalls Melissa.

Mike ran towards the trailhead desperately searching for cell service. “911, what’s your emergency?” Mike responded to the 911 dispatcher, “Tree branch just fell and hit my daughter.”

As they waited and prayed for help to arrive, Melissa realized the extent of Mia’s injury. “It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when we're going to lose her. It's too big of an injury that I remember touching it and I just said her skull was crushed.”

Mike says, “I'm just crying out to God. I believe in Him. And no matter what happens next, even if she's going to leave this earth, I love Him and I trust Him, but I know that He is the one who has the power to change the situation.”

Melissa recalls saying, "I said it over and over again, ‘Please don't take her. Please don't take her. Please don't take her. Four years wasn't enough.’” Melissa remembered a story in the Bible of a woman who was healed by touching the hem of Jesus’ robe. “If the power of Jesus is that strong, where the woman just had to touch His cloak to be healed and that power and the spirit lives in me, then I believe God could heal my daughter and so I just pray that over and over again. I would put my hands on her, ‘Please heal our daughter. Heal our daughter, please heal our daughter.’”

First responders finally arrived and rushed Mia to a nearby hospital. Mike followed in his car, but stopped to call his church staff to pray. Prayers quickly spread through his church leadership around the country and the world. He says, “They were praying on behalf and interceding on our daughter's behalf to the Lord and that God would present a miracle, that God would do something.”

Mia was put in a medically induced coma and transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Doctors confirmed she had a traumatic brain injury, a fractured skull, and bleeding in and around the brain. For her parents, so many questions remained unanswered. Melissa says, “Was Mia going to wake up? Was she going to be Mia? Was she going to be severely brain damaged? It seemed inevitable with everything we had seen.”

The next morning hospital staff brought her out of the coma. Melissa recalls, “She reached down and grabbed the diaper that they had on her and she said, ‘I peed in my Pull Up!’ And for me was just like, whoa, like, she's...she's good. Like, like she can't stand the feeling of having a wet pull up on. So she can feel and she's coherent. It was a really cool moment. She was alive, He gave us our daughter.”

Mia showed signs of paralysis on the left side of her body but overcame any deficits within three days. Weeks later, she had a craniotomy to repair her skull and the tear to the dura of her brain. Amazingly, she recovered all cognitive function and all of her personality. “She's awesome. So much fun. She's hilarious. And she just has so much spirit, so much life inside of her. You'd never know anything happened to her,” says Melissa.

Mia remains healthy and full of life. To everyone’s amazement Mia made a full recovery. Months after the accident she confessed something to her dad. “She said, ‘Daddy, I had a dream about Jesus.’ And I'm like, ‘Oh, did you?’ She said, ‘Yeah, He was with me and He brought me home.’"

"We’re just so grateful. I do believe that she experienced something because I don't think she should be here. I don't I believe that God healed her. His hand was on her life. He raised her. He raised her up,” says Mike.

Mike and Melissa are thankful for the prayers and the peace that sustained them during what could have been a life ending situation. Melissa says, “There is no explanation, this earth, as to how we had the peace that we did. He gave me the peace and he gave me the comfort that I needed when I needed it.”

Mike adds, “I don't know where I would be right now if it weren't for Jesus. God moved. And we're just of course, we're grateful and thankful that we get a chance to raise our daughter.”

Couple Faces Financial Ruin After Health Crisis

Delbert and Belinda are a devoted couple who love the Lord. But their lives changed dramatically when Delbert got sick at work. Delbert said, “You know, I didn’t really want to take time off because we were in a tight financial situation at that time. When I got off, I went home, told my wife, I said, 'Look here, we need to probably go on and go to the hospital.'”

“The Dr. comes in and says, ‘This is very bad,’” added Belinda.

“'Mr. Shelton,' he said, ‘It looks like you’re a very, very sick man right now,'” Delbert recalled. Delbert was admitted to the hospital after being diagnosed with MRSA and double pneumonia. The long hospital stay was tough.

Belinda said, “Whenever he came home from the hospital, he was very sick still. And having to take care of him 24/7, I couldn’t go to work. There was no more paychecks.” Delbert added, “We needed food. We were at, we could say dire straits."

That’s when Belinda discovered DC Downtown Food Ministry, a partner of Operation Blessing. Belinda told us, “They pray with you and they basically tell you, ‘It’s going to be okay, we’re here for you.’ And we were truly blessed by everything that we got there. I’d come in the door and say, ‘Look what a blessing I got! Look what God did!’ You could just feel the love of Jesus there.”

Thanks to CBN partners, Delbert and Belinda received the help they needed to get by. Now, Delbert is healthy once again, and the couple is back on their feet.

Delbert said, “It’s like that breath of fresh air, you know when you thought that all was lost and everything was bleak and you can get up and go another step.”

Belinda was thankful for the help, saying, “Thank you for your donations, thank you for your time. And thank you for loving God and loving people enough to help somebody else.”
