Mending Vera’s Heart

–Vera Joiner helps out in a little sandwich shop in the French Quarter of New Orleans. In her spare time she volunteers ministering to homeless teens. But her life hasn’t always been so simple or so blessed. She knows the hurts the kids are going through. As a young girl, Vera’s father beat her and broke her Christian records. But she never stopped praying for him.
Vera read us a letter she wrote to Pat Robertson about a miracle.
Vera says, “Ten years later, as I was crying over a divorce, Dad came into my room, tears flowing from his beautiful blue eyes, and said, ‘You’ve been praying for me. Now I want to pray for you. I’ve been listening to Rev. Pat Robertson on television, and [I] just prayed the sinner’s prayer with him.’ Six months later he died, but I know in experience God is faithful.”
Fast forward to 2006, and Vera is one of many who survived Hurricane Katrina. But besides the basic necessities, Vera desperately needed heart medication.
“My doctor told me that without my medicine I would die,” says Vera. “My medicine at Charity Hospital cost $3 a bottle. Now the cheapest is $45, and I’ve got 12 medicines I’m on.”
Operation Blessing found out about Vera’s need and met it with hundreds of dollars of vouchers for medication.
“So thank you very much, and thank you for helping our city,” says Vera.
Vera asked that her letter of thanks about the medicine and her father’s salvation be given to Pat directly, but we were able to do a little bit better than that.
Vera got to meet Pat Robertson personally. He had a special gift for Vera.
“Vera, I understand you’ve been having some health problems,” Pat told her. “So I have here some gift certificates to take care of your medicine.”
Vera was thrilled. She told him, “Of all the church groups to come in, to have you come in... I’m serving the Lord because of you, and you and I didn’t even know each other. I’m going to be a dancing, shouting Baptist for days now.
Vera has some advice for anyone else wanting a miracle.
“Don’t tell God how to do anything,” Vera says. “Of course I didn’t expect Dr. Pat Robertson to be handing me that, but that’s how our Father is. God is love. He’s not mean; He’s not rude. God is love, and He saw my need.”
