England Churches May No Longer Hold Sunday Services

Low church attendance may be forcing the Church of England to close its doors on Sundays.

The Church of England has seen a drastic decrease in parishioners each week. That is why it is considering dropping a law requiring churches to host services every Sunday.

Last year England's Sunday church attendance fell below 1 million for the first time, hitting an all time low of just 760,000.

Since 1975 church law has stated that "Morning and Evening Prayer shall be said or sung in every parish church at least on all Sundays."

However, the Bishop of Willesden says churches now may not be in service on some Sundays in "sparsely populated benefices."

"The Group is not considering having parishes without Sunday services -- there just wouldn't be a service in every church," a spokesperson told The Independent.

The Church hopes this new strategy will take some of the pressure off parishes that seen less people filling their pews.
