Sam Hemmings was a normal 22-year old when a horrendous car accident left her fighting for his life. The impact of the  crash broke four bones in her spine and took her left ear off.

The prognosis was dim. Doctors diagnosed her brain dead with no chance of survival.

Surgeons operated on Sam around the clock and put her in a medically induced coma for 19 days. When her condition did not improve, doctors said the only choice was to pull her off life support.

"They usually give a patient three attempts to see if they can breathe on their own before switching off," Sam's mom Carol told Unilad News

The physicians got no response the first couple of tries but then a miracle happened.

"Before they switched it off for a final time her big toe wiggled." Mrs. Hemming said. "She had literally come back from the dead. If she hadn't wiggled her toe she wouldn't be here today."

Sam continues to defy medicine.

Eight weeks after wiggling her toe, she is now walking and talking.

"When I look at the pictures of me in the coma it seems unreal and when I hear that my toe saved me it's amazing," Sam said.
