Blair Resolute on New Anti-Terror Measures

Tony Blair's announcement today that Britain is enacting tough new anti-terrorism measures was inspiring to watch. I've never seen Blair--who is normally smooth as silk even under the most intense questioning from Britain's liberal media hordes--look so forceful in public. You could almost see smoke streaming from his ears as he spoke. Blair's anger is justified and long overdue, and if he sticks to his guns, London will no longer be a playground for radical Islamists.

Blair proved that he's willing to take an unpopular political stand with his support of the war in Iraq (a majority of Brits opposed the war). And while I think the new anti-terror laws will be extremely popular among the British public, when it comes to the notoriously left-wing British media and a number of British politicians, Blair may be in for an uphill battle. Two ideas of what he's up against: George Galloway, a British Parliament member who, during a recent visit to Syria no less, said that Blair and President Bush had "blood on their hands." And Ken Livingstone, mayor of London and a member of Blair's own Labour Party, who recently explained Hamas terrorism like this: "Palestinians don't have jet fighters, they only have their bodies to use as weapons." So, Ken, I guess that means suicide bombings are completely legitimate? Wow. And President Bush thought he had it bad with Dick Durbin and Teddy Kennedy.

Thankfully, Britain has had a very strong response to the London bombings and has acted swiftly and decisively to bring the bombers and their associates to justice. After being practically comatose for years in the face of the radical Islamic threat festering within Britain's borders, Blair is now fully aware of what he's up against. Even better, he's angry about it. My gut tells me he'll be able to push the new anti-terror legislation through, but not without a fight.
