CEOs Team Up to Fight Global Warming

CBNNews.com - Chief executives of many of the country's largest corporations have joined the growing call for action to fight global warming.

The business roundtable represents 160 chief executives of leading U.S. companies - including the energy giant Exxon Mobil, the country's largest coal producer Peabody Energy Co., the Atlanta-based electric utility Southern Co.

The group says "collective actions" should be taken now to begin reducing so-called 'greenhouse" gases like carbon dioxide.

"The consequences of global warming for society and ecosystems are potentially serious and far-reaching," the business group said. "Steps to address the risks of such warming are prudent now even while the science continues to evolve."

Many companies are already taking initiative. Wal-Mart is succeeding with an ambitious plan to cut fuel usage in its tractor trailer delivery trucks.

The company says it has already made the fleet 15 percent more fuel efficient, and will reach a target of 25 percent by late next year.

The annual savings in carbon dioxide emissions would be equal to taking almost 68,000 cars off the road.

Chad Holliday, chairman of DuPont, heads the group's environment task force.
