Brody File Readers React to Right to Life Endorsement

November 15, 2007

Fred Thompson fans were smiling when the National Right to life endorsed their guy but fans of other candidates were not. Below are some emails I received about the endorsement:

From Pam:

The NRLC endorsement of Fred really fried me! Not only because I thought Romney was the best choice, but because Thompson is anything but a true-blue lifer. His good record on abortion in the senate was merely a state's rights thing with him - not because he is committed to life. After his big gaffe with Russert and the NRLC jumps on board? What gives? It's really puzzling, because surely they know this helps Rudy. I guess they want him. Thompson has no credible path to the nomination.  I still think his campaign is a slow train wreck.
From Kathleen:
It should've been Huckabee!  He's so clear and consistent on his stand.  Thompson hasn't always been so...only since the birth of his child he says.  Instead of copping out for the "most electable" they should vote according to their beliefs....endorse the right person, Huckabee, then he can win.
From Anonymous:
Fred Thompson may say he is personally pro-life, but his conversion has not gone far enough to the point where he is willing to LEAD the nation toward the day that we can end abortion on demand. He specifically has rejected the Human Life Amendment. He's led efforts in the past to water down the GOP platform and thinks it is divisive…Moreover, he refuses to support an abortion ban in his own state even after Roe v Wade is overturned.  It is an outrage that you'd honor him with an endorsement
From Trey:

I am a support of Fred Thompson, and I believe he will practically help the pro-life movement get on the path it needs to get on to achieve a national ban on abortion.  Therefore, I don't believe Sen. Thompson will hurt the pro-life cause.  Sen. Thompson doesn't necessarily support every pro-life position (Human Life Amendment), but he also will NEVER support a pro-abortion position, so I believe pro-lifers can count on Sen. Thompson to make practical steps toward a national ban on abortion.

From Chris:

I can't tell you how disappointed and disgusted I am by this endorsement.  As an pro life advocate my entire life, it breaks my heart to see the NRLC sell out and compromise their values and endorse a candidate who opposes their primary platform: a federal ban on abortion. Let me get Fred's position straight: he believes that life begins at conception, thus abortion is murder.  But he thinks it's okay if some states choose to allow murder of unborn children?  And the NRLC endorses that???
Mike Huckabee, who is constantly moving up in the polls, was there for the taking.  They could've rallied around the true pro life candidate, but they sold out and endorsed a former abortion rights lobbyist who opposes a federal ban on abortion.
