Abortion Will Be Discussed at The Compassion Forum
April 9, 2008
I’m told by the organizers of The Compassion Forum that abortion will be one of the topics discussed Sunday night when Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton take the stage at Messiah College. I received this statement from Katie Barge, Communications Director of the group Faith in Public Life and really, the woman who has been the driving force behind this historic event:
“We hope to get to the heart of the issue and why it’s so divisive. We hope to try to pry the door open to potential common ground and ask if the political labels we use when it come to abortion really capture where Americans are on the issue.”
One thing both sides agree about is the need to reduce abortions so basically that is the common ground that will be explored. But here’s the tricky part for pro-lifers. When you’re talking about bills in Congress to “reduce abortions”, pro-life groups know that it means including more federal money for contraception programs. This is a big stumbling block because the pro-lifers are also wary of the culture war and federal money for condoms doesn’t fit the “fighting the culture war” mindset.
Can there be a way to “reduce abortions” in this country without bringing the abstinence debate into the mix? That’s tough.
