Suspicious Timing? Israel's Nuke Program Declassified

For years, most people in the Middle East assumed Israel possessed several nuclear weapons. Details of the Jewish state's nuclear program remained under wraps because Western leaders feared revealing the information would possibly lead to a regional nuclear arms race.

But in February, the Pentagon decided to declassify a 1987 Department of Defense document detailing Israel's nuclear program in great depth.

The timing of the document's release remains suspect because of growing animosity and rising tensions between President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

As U.S. negotators attempt to finalize a nuclear agreement with Iran, the Obama administration has done what its White House predecessors refused to do: lift the veil of secrecy on the nuclear capabilities of one of America's closest allies.

What's the political motivation for this action, and what are the likely consequences for the United States and Israel?
