Hundreds of Thousands Mourn Pope’s Passing

CBN.com THE VATICAN - One cardinal called it the largest funeral in history. Some 300,000 mourners jammed into Saint Peter's Square for today's funeral mass.

Among those mourners were leaders from around the world. Millions more watched on giant video screens set up all around the city.

Applause broke out as the Pope's simple wooden coffin was brought out from Saint Peter's Basilica. It was adorned with just a cross and an "M" for Mary.

The dean of the College of Cardinals, who might be a successor, said that John Paul II was a priest to the last, offering his life for God and his flock.

And in his homily, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, declared, "Today we bury his remains in the earth as a seed of immortality - our hearts are full of sadness, yet at the same time of joyful hope and profound gratitude."

Security was particularly heavy as kings, presidents and prime ministers gathered for the Mass. Some 8,000 security agents were in the streets, combat jets and helicopters overhead, and a warship off the shore near Rome.

President Bush and his wife led the U.S. delegation, and he ended up seated next to an ally with whom he has had his disagreements, French President Jacques Chirac.

Many will remember this pope for his insistence that Catholics stick to the strict moral teachings of the Church. Bishop Donald Wuerl said some may not have liked that, but still loved the man for taking such clear stands.

Bishop Wuerl said, "I think what we're seeing in this outpouring of affection for the Pope, is that people loved him because of the clarity of his thought."

The funeral was not limited to the Vatican. In Krakow, Poland where the pope studied for the priesthood, 800,000 people gathered in a huge field to watch the Mass on huge TV screens.
