WASHINGTON - Following last month's London bombings, British Prime Minister
Tony Blair promised a tough response. And now he has delivered, announcing
strict new anti-terrorism measures designed to stamp out radical Islam
in Britain.
Tony Blair has a message for Britain's radical Islamists: the rules of
the game are changing. And from now on, anyone who preaches jihad in Britain
will not be staying for very long.
Blair said, “Let me just make it very clear to you. In my view,
anybody who is coming from abroad into our country and coming here to
say 'suicide bombing is a good thing and these people are heroes and they
should do more of it' and all the rest of the appalling rubbish that we've
heard, they shouldn't come into Britain. And if they're here, they should
leave.”
Blair is promising tough new anti-terror laws to help Britain avoid a
repeat of July's London bombings. He is also vowing that Britain will
continue to take the fight to the terrorists in their own backyard.
“What happens in the Middle East is a very important part of winning
this battle here,” Blair stated. “What happens in Iraq and
Afghanistan is a very important part of winning this battle here.”
President Bush agrees. He points to the 9/11 attacks as proof that the
best way to defeat al-Qaeda is to stay on the offensive.
Bush remarked, “I said it then and I'll say it now. We owe it to
the American people and other freedom-loving countries around the world
to bring these terrorists to justice. And that's what they are--they're
terrorists, and they're killers.”
The President's strong words follow the release of a new al-Qaeda videotape.
In it, al-Qaeda's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, blamed Blair for
the London bombings.
And he threatened the U.S. and Britain with more attacks if they refused
to withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan.
