JERUSALEM, Israel - Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
shook up his country's government when he resigned from the cabinet
Sunday.
He stepped down after the cabinet voted for
the forced evacuation of three Jewish settlements in the Gaza
Strip.
Netanyahu said the government's "blind
insistence" on the Gaza pullout will create a base for terrorists,
and put Israel and the west in danger.
Netanyahu said, “I think there is a great battle in the
world today, between the forces of terror and the forces of freedom.
The only way that we can win this battle - anywhere, everywhere
- is by confronting terror, and not appeasing it. Appeasement
doesn't work. You can try to go around this a hundred times. It
just doesn't work.”
As finance minister, Netanyahu had been working to cut taxes
and unshackle Israel's economy. The Israeli stock exchange reacted
to his resignation with the biggest one-day drop in three years.
Ehud Olmert, a Sharon loyalist, will replace Netanyahu as finance
minister. Netanyahu will now lead the opposition to Sharon within
the Likud Party, and will almost certainly run against Sharon
for the Likud's top spot in the next elections.
In the meantime, the cabinet vote means that the first eviction
of the Jewish settlers could be just days away. Many who are about
to lose their homes are still holding out hope.
“We didn't have any high expectations from the government,
so we are not surprised or disappointed by the recent decisions.
We hope that when the government isn't acting logically, the people
will… act sensibly and help us save this situation,”
remarked Gaza Strip resident Hadassah Diom.
