The Washington-based liberal advocacy group Common Cause is urging that the Clinton Foundation set up an independent audit of foreign donations to the foundation and make the findings public, according to a report in The Washington Examiner.

Although Hillary Clinton has cut ties to the foundation as part of her campaign preparations to run for the Democratic nomination for president, the establishment media have raised a number of questions about the nature and timing of foreign donations while Mrs. Clinton headed the State Department in the early years of the Obama Administration.

In its call for the audit, Common Cause President Michael Rapoport cited a report this week in the New York Times that "the Clinton Foundation violated an agreement to identify all of its donors.  The foundation's omissions create significant gaps in the information that voters need to make decisions at the polls."

Rapaport also alluded to a warning by a former senator in 2009 about perceptions of improper foreign influence on the U.S. government.  "Six years ago, at Mrs. Clinton's confirmation hearing for her appointment as secretary of state, then-Senator Dick Lugar observed that 'foreign governments and entities may perceive the Clinton Foundation as a means to gain favor with the secretary of state.'  He was right, and his remarks reman relevant today as Mrs. Clinton seeks the presidency," Rapaport said.
