Ohio Gov. John Kasich became the 16th Republican to join the crowded field of GOP presidential hopefuls Tuesday, declaring "big ideas change the world."

"I am here to ask you for your prayers, for your support, for your efforts because I have decided to run for president," Kasich, 63, told a crowd of 2,000 at Ohio State University.

He noted that, unlike his fellow GOP contenders, he had experience in three areas: the federal budget, national security, and state government.

"I have the experience and the testing," he said, "the testing which shapes you and prepares you for the most important job in the world. And I believe I know how to work and help restore this great United States."

The second-term governor and former congressman is known for his unfiltered style and policies that are not always in line with his party.

He's also privatized part of Ohio's government and helped get rid of the state's budget deficit. Private sector jobs in the state have now rebounded to where they were before the recession.
