Officials have lifted wildfire evacuation orders for 20,000 residents in San Diego, and thousands of residents are returning to their homes.

Record heat, dry air, and high winds created dangerous fire conditions in the southwest of California. Hundreds of acres were lost to the flames, and the fires burned dangerously close to homes.

Red flag warnings are still in effect for more than 15 million people, especially with some temperatures remaining in the triple digits for the rest of the week.

Officials and volunteers are preparing for what could be another round of wildfires because of the conditions.

"We believe we have a pretty good handle on it," San Diego Fire Chief Javier Mainar said. "We hope to do some more work through the night and into tomorrow, but I think the largest part of the emergency has passed."

No homes were reported damaged.
