Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson will face aggressive questioning on Capitol Hill over an immigration scandal Thursday.

Johnson will appear before the House Judiciary Committee to discuss the Obama administration's release of 36,000 convicted criminal immigrants. He has asked for an internal review of the government's actions.

Johnson said he was "committed to enforcing our immigration laws in a manner that best promotes and ensures national security, public safety and border security," in a testimony sent to Congress ahead of a hearing.

The tens of thousands of criminal immigrants, including 193 homicide and 426 sexual assault convicted criminals, were facing deportation when they were released by immigration judges.

They still face deportation and are required to check in with immigration authorities while their cases are pending.
