A man described by the FBI as an ISIS sympathizer has been charged with plotting to detonate a backpack bomb on a beach in Florida.

Authorities say 23-year-old Harlem Suarez of Key West came to the FBI's attention through his online posts praising ISIS and containing extremist rhetoric.

Suarez told an FBI informant he wanted to bury a time bomb on a beach in Key West and blow it up. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

"There is no room for failure when it comes to investigating the potential use of a weapon of mass destruction," FBI spokesman George L. Piro said following Suarez's arrest. "The FBI and our local, state and federal partners work around the clock to prevent such catastrophic weapons from being used against our citizens."

"Even so, we ask the public to be vigilant and report suspicious activity to law enforcement," he said.
