Box Office Slump for Family Friendliness

For a rainy weekend with the family, movie reviewers indicate it might be a good idea to stay in rather than check out the new releases at the theater.

One movie out on limited release, "Love and Mercy" -- rated a 2.5 out of 5 because of language -- tells the story of the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson.

Focus on the Family's PluggedIn Online Director Bob Waliszewsk says it has potential, but misses the mark because of one key fault.

"One of the things that really concerned us... numerous misuses of our Savior's name. Just can't recommend 'Love and Mercy,'" he told CBN News.

"Entourage," "Spy" and "Insidious" are also in theaters this weekend, but they all get a big thumbs down for family friendliness from PluggedIn.

A safer option is "Far from the Madding Crowd," starring Cary Mulligan. Set in Victorian England, it tells the story of an independent and headstrong young woman who manages to draw the attention of three very different suitors.

"I think the film gives us quite a bit to talk about here," he said. "For teens on up it has potential."

Waliszewski also recommends NBC's "A.D." series and Hallmark Channel's TV movie "Signed, Sealed, Delivered: From Paris with Love," as options for families. Click play to watch.
