Fact Check: 5 Planned Parenthood Myths Debunked

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards own testimony before Congress this week may be the very thing that clears up a few myths about the agency believed as fact.

During Richards testimony she was questioned about several things including abortion services, mammograms and more.

Here are a few myths shattered by her testimony.

Myth 1: Three percent of services are abortions.
Truth: Twelve percent of services are abortions and with removal of federal funding that number would be 86 percent of Planned Parenthood's revenue coming from abortion services.

Myth 2: If the federal government defunds Planned Parenthood a major women's health need, mammograms, would be denied to women in need.
Truth: Planned Parenthood is not equipped or licensed to offer mammograms.

Myth 3: Planned Parenthood is needed in communities across America to provide vital women's health services to which women would otherwise not have access.
Truth: Community Health Clinics which offer women's health services like mammograms exist anywhere from 10 to 20 to one in cities across the nation.

A new website called Getyourcare.org can help women locate clinics and centers with women's healthcare services.

Myth 4: Ending Planned Parenthood funding would reduce abortion services.
Truth: Federal funds to clinics and health centers are not supposed to be used to provide abortions.

Myth 5: Planned Parenthood is a non-profit.
Truth: Planned Parenthood made $127 million in 2014.
