A chilling sign reminiscent of the rise of Adolph Hitler is taking place in eastern Ukraine.

Leaflets demanding that Jews register with local authorities or face consequences are being distributed in the east, including the Ukrainian city of Donetsk.

The Associated Press describes the Donetsk People's Republic as an "unrecognized, breakaway authority" seeking to be part of Russia.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting in Geneva on the situation in Ukraine, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry denounced the leaflets, calling them "grotesque."

"In the year 2014, after all of the miles traveled and all of the journey of history, this is not just intolerable; it's grotesque," Kerry said.

"It is beyond unacceptable," he continued. "And any of the people who engage in these kinds of activities, from whatever party or whatever ideology or whatever place they crawl out of, there is no place for that."

The State Department called the leaflets a serious issue and said it was being investigated.
