New signs emerged Friday from Europe that a peace deal may be in the works to end the fighting in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko have been meeting at a summit of European and Asian leaders in Italy.

Putin is seeking to ease Western sanctions against his country after Russia's covert military incursions into Ukraine.

But European leaders are not backing down in their support for Ukraine.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Putin that Russia must fully respect last month's cease-fire. And British Prime Minister David Cameron challenged Russia to stop fueling violence in Ukraine.

"Vladimir Putin said very clearly that he doesn't want a frozen conflict; he doesn't want a divided Ukraine. But if that's the case, then Russia now needs to take the actions to put in place all that's been agreed: getting Russian troops out of Ukraine, getting heavy weapons out of Ukraine, and respecting all the agreements and only recognizing one legitimate set of Ukrainian elections," Cameron said.

"If those things don't happen, then clearly the European Union, Britain included, must keep in place the sanctions and the pressure so that we don't have this kind of conflict in our continent," he continued.

Both sides still disagree on the details of a peace deal.
