Russia threatened to use nuclear aggression to defend its takeover of Crimea, the London Observer newspaper reports.

That information comes from notes made by an American at a March meeting in Germany between Russian generals and U.S. officials. Those notes were seen by the London Times.

During the meeting, the Russians warned that if there was a move to take Crimea away from Russia and return it to Ukraine, Russia would respond "forcefully including through the use of nuclear force."

The Russians also reportedly threatened possible military action against the Baltic states, which are all members of NATO.
