Nigerian troops pushed back an attack by radical Islamist fighters from Boko Haram Sunday.

Troops from the terror group attacked the biggest city in northeast Nigeria, Maiduguri.

Several civilians were killed by aerial bombs along with grenades and mortar shells on the ground.

Homes shook for five hours from heavy artillery fire in the city of 2 million, which has been a key target for Boko Haram.

One army officer said their radical fighters attacked on all four roads leading into the city.

Government soldiers reportedly killed up to 500 of the fighters from Boko Haram.
