Masked gunmen kidnapped 13 Coptic Christians in central Libya Saturday morning.

The attack occured in Sirte and is the latest in a new round of assaults against Egypt's Christians working in the war-torn North African nation plagued with Islamic extremists.

An eyewitness told the Associated Press the gunmen went room to room in their residence Saturday and asked for identification to separate Muslim workers from Christians.

Sirte has become a safe haven for extremist Islamist groups, like the one blamed for the September 2013 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
