Japan suggested it's open to negotiating with the Islamic State for the release of two of its citizens being held by the terrorist group.

In a video released Tuesday, ISIS said it would kill the hostages -- Kenji Goto Jogo and Haruna Yukawa -- within 72 hours unless it receives a $200 million ransom.

A Japanese expert on Islamic law, who claims to be in contact with ISIS, says he is prepared to help the government reach a bargain, but that three days is not enough time.

A government spokesman said Japan is trying to reach ISIS and that Tokyo is "prepared to consider all possible ways to save them."

However, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga says that so far there’s been no response from ISIS, CNN reports.

The deadline is believed to sometime Friday.
