Nigeria's Boko Haram jihadists are reportedly offering to free more than 200 girls kidnapped from a school in the town of Chibok in exchange for the release of militant leaders held by the government.

The Christian girls' abduction in April 2014 ignited worldwide outrage and a social media campaign called #BringBackOurGirls.

Not long after the mass kidnapping, Boko Haram released pictures of the girls with a warning that they would never been seen again unless more than a dozen Boko Haram militants captured by the Nigerian government were released.

The new offer to exchange the girls for Boko Haram detainees is similar to the negotiations between the Islamic terror group and the Nigerian government under former President Goodluck Jonathan. Those negotiations broke down.

The talks have reopened under new President Muhammadu Buhari, who has been in office only five weeks.
