A Surprising Discovery

land is barren for as far as the eye can see in a small Muslim
village high in the mountains of China. Residents are dehydrated
and weak due to a serious water shortage that has lasted for years.
“We haven’t had a well in our village for 50 years,”
says a man by the name of Mr. Ma. “People tried to dig one,
but they were unsuccessful and lost hope.”
So they were forced to travel up to an hour by foot to collect
fresh water, sometimes as often as eight times each day. “It’s
especially hard on the old, the weak, the sick, and the handicapped,”
says the village leader.
But if they didn’t make the trips, they would not have
water to drink, cook with, wash clothes in, water crops, or keep
the animals alive. It looked like there was no solution in sight.
That is until CBN learned of their hardship.
“When the villagers heard that CBN was coming, they said
it was a life saver,” says their leader.
That’s because CBN set up a village-wide cistern program
so each family could have their own fresh water. They were digging
simple receptacles for rainwater, but as the villagers dug deeper
they soon made an amazing discover -- an underground source of
clean water.
“I dug and I dug and then, suddenly, the water poured out.
Everyone in my family was glad and so excited,” said one
villager.
When the project was complete, 48 families had full blown wells.
Fifty-two others had cisterns to hold rainwater.
“Almost all the households have running water now,”
says the village leader. “No-one has problems getting drinking
water. It’s the same with the oxen. They can drink as much
as they want. And there’s no problem washing clothes.”
Thanks to the generosity of CBN partners, a whole town has turned
around. The water has given the people here hope --and will keep
the village going for generations to come.
“Many people say we have a new village now,” says
the leader. “You saved our lives.”
