CBN.com —Shun works close to two thousand feet underground as a coal miner.  His shifts are never less than 12 hours long—and he rarely gets a night off.  He does it all for his five-year-old daughter, Cong Yan.  He knows she’s counting on him.

Cong Yan was diagnosed with a serious heart disease as a baby—and all the doctors said that unless she got heart surgery, she would die.  Shun remembers, “She was so weak and fragile—and always sick. It broke my heart to see my daughter suffering like that.   But we couldn’t get any help because we couldn’t pay for surgery.”

Despite the danger of his job, Cong Yan’s father only brings in 158 dollars a month!  “Sometimes the mines collapse and get flooded. But I’d rather risk dying myself than losing my daughter.  She is worth everything to my wife and me.”

As hard as he worked, Shun still could not raise enough money for surgery, and Cong Yan’s heart condition took a turn for the worse.

Cong Yan’s mother recalls, “Some people told me that it wasn’t worth it to try to save Cong Yan’s life anymore and to just forget about it.  But we didn’t give that a second thought.”

Then Cong Yan’s mother heard that CBN was coming to town to help fund heart surgery for children like her daughter.  Soon, a doctor repaired the hole in Cong Yan’s heart and repositioned her artery.

“I feel so relieved now,” Shun smiles.  “I was always so concerned about my daughter when I was at work at the coal mine.  But not anymore.  All my worries are gone. And I believe Cong Yan has a very bright future.  Thank you CBN!”
