DISASTER RELIEF

Nepal Quake Victims Still in Desperate Need

KATHMANDU, Nepal - There are now more than 100 camps in Nepal's capital of Kathmandu that are home to thousands of earthquake victims. With many coming from destroyed mountainside villages to the large city—some even traveling over two weeks on foot to get there—the number of families moving into these makeshift camps continues to grow while conditions worsen.

Access to safe water is a major issue, with most of the camps lacking clean water, showers and bathrooms. To combat this problem, Operation Blessing's safe water teams are distributing chlorine and setting up safe water stations throughout the camps. OBI also purchased an 1800 gallon water truck that is going to be working around the clock in Kathmandu, to shuttle clean water to the tanks installed all over the city.

In one camp, OBI is even building bathrooms, a shared kitchen with kitchen supplies and high beds for infants to keep them safe from snakes. Teams are also providing mosquito nets and mattresses, as well as uniforms and school supplies so the children in the camp can return to school in August.

Families will also receive hygiene kits that include toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, and more as part of a program that teaches proper hygiene practices in an effort to reduce the threat of sickness and disease in the camps.

Operation Blessing is also reaching those still struggling to survive in remote villages several hours from Kathmandu. One distribution was able to bring critical aid to more than a thousand people who had traveled from surrounding villages, with some walking up to 4 hours to get there. They received rice, lentils, blankets, cereal, salt, oil, kitchen utensils, mosquito nets, chlorine and more.

OBI teams have also partnered with local organizations to distribute rice and vegetable seeds to farmers and help villages set up seed banks that will help safeguard against shortages in the future.
